In the summer of 2015, Matt “Kroc” Kroczaleski, a former US Marine and world record-holding weightlifter, was revealed to be transgender. The reaction was unanimous: her sponsors dropped her, her family cut ties, she faced a ban from competitions, and she chose to go by “Janae.” The film chronicles Janae’s struggle to carve out a place for herself in a world that seems unforgiving. She initially aimed to shed her muscle mass in pursuit of a more traditionally feminine appearance, despite finding the task almost impossible due to the muscle she had painstakingly built.
