Set in 1880s China, the story follows Lalu, a young woman sold into matrimony by her financially struggling father. Instead of becoming a bride, Lalu is relocated to an Idaho gold-mining town, where she is owned by a saloon keeper who rechristens her as China Polly with the intention of selling her as entertainment for the community. However, Lalu steadfastly refuses to become a prostitute and eventually carves out her path in this unfamiliar land populated by white settlers.
