Dexter’s Laboratory

Dexter’s Laboratory is a popular American animated series created by Genndy Tartakovsky for Cartoon Network, blending comedy with science fiction elements. The story revolves around Dexter, a young genius with a secret lab filled with a variety of his inventions, and his constant struggles with his sister Dee Dee, who somehow always manages to infiltrate his secret space despite his strongest efforts to prevent her entry, as well as with his arch-enemy and neighbor, Mandark. The first two seasons of the show include extra segments: “Dial M for Monkey,” showcasing Dexter’s pet monkey who becomes a superhero, and “The Justice Friends,” detailing the domestic lives of three superheroes who live together.

The series was initially pitched by Tartakovsky for Hanna-Barbera’s World Premiere Toons, inspired by his student films from the California Institute of the Arts. In 1995 and 1996, four shorts aired on Cartoon Network, leading to high viewer ratings and a subsequent order for a 13-episode first season, which premiered on April 28, 1996. By the end of 1999, the show had produced 52 episodes and a TV movie, after which Tartakovsky departed to work on new projects like Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars. The network later brought back the series with a new production team, culminating in 26 additional episodes until its conclusion on November 20, 2003.
