In 2013, Idris Elba created and released an album called “Idris Elba presents mi Mandela,” drawing inspiration from his research and portrayal of Nelson Mandela in the film “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” Deeply influenced by South Africa’s rich musical heritage, both contemporary and historical, Elba immersed himself in the sounds that shaped Mandela’s life to authentically prepare for his role. Plans were set for the album’s recording in South Africa and Mali towards the year’s end, but tragically, Elba’s father, Winston, passed away just before his departure.
