In the rural areas of New South Wales, Rhia, a working-class single mother, is grappling with debt collectors while trying to raise her three young daughters. Her eldest daughter, Lou, who has matured too quickly for her age, holds Rhia responsible for her father’s disappearance 10 months ago. The relationship between Rhia and Lou hits rock bottom when Rhia decides to take in her father-in-law, Doyle, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Initially, Lou is hostile towards Doyle, but her attitude changes as he captivates her with thrilling stories of his adventures in the South Seas. However, Doyle’s mind is most preoccupied with fragmented memories of his late wife, Annie. Soon, Doyle begins to “see” Annie in Lou and believes he is courting her once again.
