In his fourth feature film, director Toyoshi Toyoda shifts away from the recurring theme of the angry young man he explored in Pornostar, Blue Spring, and 9 Souls. Kuchu Teien unfolds as a drama focused on a character study rather than a typical genre piece associated with Toyoda. Beneath its beautifully structured and photographed surface lies a more sinister core, as it ostensibly follows the story of a seemingly content family. However, as the film progresses, the facade of happiness unravels, revealing that the Kyobashi family is far from what they appear to be.
