Shin Dong-Hyuk, born on November 19, 1983, was condemned from birth as a political prisoner in a North Korean re-education camp. His parents, both prisoners, were married under the wardens’ orders. Spending his entire childhood and teenage years in the brutal surroundings of Camp 14, effectively a death camp, Shin was subjected to forced labor from the tender age of six, enduring relentless hunger, physical abuse, and torture. His understanding of life beyond the fortified camp’s limits was nonexistent. At 23, aided by an older inmate, Shin bravely managed to flee.
