In the present day, in the town of Shubei, southeastern China, Liu Chuan returns in disguise five years after vanishing with RMB 800,000 from a bank robbery. Wang Laoshi, the policeman on duty during the theft, was demoted when Liu slipped through his hands and remains at the local station, persistently watching for Liu’s return. By sheer coincidence, Liu checks into a small guesthouse within Wang’s jurisdiction, where Qin Xiaosong, a psychology graduate escaping her controlling parents, is also staying. The following day, Wang spots Liu on the street and pursues him, ultimately handcuffing Liu in an abandoned warehouse. Fate intervenes as an earthquake strikes, causing the structure to collapse; Wang is knocked out, and Liu takes his uniform. Choosing to save Qin, Liu inadvertently ends up aiding other residents and earns their admiration as a hero.
