Twelve-year-old Dre Parker was poised to be a popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s new job has taken them to China instead. He quickly becomes enamored with his classmate Mei Ying; however, cultural differences hinder their friendship. This crush also puts Dre at odds with the school bully, Cheng. In this unfamiliar environment, Dre finds an unexpected ally in Mr. Han, the maintenance worker who is secretly a kung fu master. Mr. Han teaches Dre that kung fu focuses on personal growth and tranquility, not just fists and fighting. Dre comes to understand that confronting his bullies will be one of his greatest challenges.
