In 2017, Canada, known for its welcoming nature, embraced 27,000 refugees—remarkably close to the number admitted by its much larger neighbor, the United States. The majority of these individuals hailed from countries like Syria and Iraq, undergoing arduous journeys to find solace and safety. To depict their trials and triumphs, the acclaimed Academy Award®-winning director Barbara Kopple chose an unexpected backdrop: a summer camp. Camp Pathfinder, nestled on an island in Canada’s scenic wilderness, has offered boys from both Canada and the U.S. a sense of belonging for over a hundred years.
