Grand Illusion

In “Grand Illusion” (1937), a collection of French soldiers, such as the aristocratic Captain de Boeldieu and the proletarian Lieutenant Maréchal, confront their class disparities while incarcerated in a German prison camp during World War I. As they are moved to a maximum-security fortress, the group devises a daring escape plan under the scrutiny of the noble German officer von Rauffenstein, who has developed an unusual friendship with de Boeldieu.
