The narrative follows a group of siblings navigating life on their own after being left to fend for themselves by their neglectful parents, relying on their cleverness and humor to survive on a tough Manchester council estate. While they pretend to be self-sufficient, help arrives in the form of Steve, a young man from a middle-class background who becomes enamored with Fiona, the eldest sibling, and gradually gets more involved with this distinctive family dynamic. Through the perspective of a remarkably intelligent fifteen-year-old, the story explores the chaotic family life marked by a contentious father, a brother concealing his true identity, a sister dealing with psychological issues, and neighbors working in the online adult industry.
