At just thirteen, Lakshmi lives with her family in a modest mountain hut in Nepal. After torrential Himalayan rains destroy their crops, her father insists that she leave home to find work and support the family financially. He introduces her to an elegant stranger who promises to arrange a job for her as a maid in the city. Filled with optimism about her future and her ability to help her loved ones, Lakshmi sets off for India.
