Set in the post-World War I era of 1920s Memphis, “The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond” revolves around the complex life of Fisher Willow, an unwelcome debutante who belongs to a family of wealthy plantation owners. Her unapologetic disdain for provincial attitudes fuels her reputation for ruffling feathers. Upon her return from studying abroad, Fisher finds herself enamored with Jimmy, a young man whose life is marred by his father’s alcoholism and his mother’s mental instability, and who works in her family’s store on the plantation grounds.
