Sparkle (Jordin Sparks), a gifted musician, faces the challenge of achieving stardom while dealing with family struggles. Hailing from a well-off Detroit neighborhood, she is the daughter of a single mother (played by Whitney Houston) and finds herself juggling a budding romance with her music manager, Stix (Derek Luke). Amidst these personal battles, Sparkle and her sisters (portrayed by Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter) aim to make their mark as a powerful singing trio during the vibrant Motown period.
